EXERCISE AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PHILOSOPHY

Routine daily, physical, activity is essential to a healthy lifestyle at any age. The US Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends one hour or more of daily physical activity for all adults (as well as children). Our philosophy is that everyone should do a combination of high intensity interval training (3 days per week), along with low intensity recreational activity on the alternate days, with a full day of rest one day per week.

For both men and women (young and old), it is essential to focus on strength and muscle development, as well as improved cardiovascular health, flexibility and balance. A well designed exercise program that incorporates high intensity functional movements can stimulate improved muscle development as well as a reduction in body fat, while improving cardiovascular health, balance and coordination all at the same time. Remember, it is important to only do high intensity exercise just 3 days per week, so your body has a chance to recover on the opposite days.

EXERCISE AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY SCHEDULE

The correct intensity of physical activity will vary depending on your age, weight, medical conditions, and previous exercise history. When you start any new exercise program, you need to begin with an intensity level that is initially comfortable for you. As your body acclimates and begins to adapt to your new exercise regimen, you should slowly increase the intensity level to ensure that your fitness level and results continue to progress.

Assuming that you have been generally inactive for several months, we would recommend that you start with our beginner level functional training workouts. However, for those individuals who find our beginner workouts too easy, we also offer advanced, intermediate, and extreme functional workouts for you to choose from. The goal is to select a starting exercise level that is right for you and then gradually progress over time. There are 12 functional workouts for each fitness level, so it will take at least 4 weeks to complete all the workouts in each difficulty level.

An example 14-day functional fitness program is as follows:

• Day 1 – Beginner functional workout 1 (M/F)
• Day 2 – 60 minutes brisk walking (3 to 4 miles)
• Day 3 – Beginner functional workout 2 (M/F)
• Day 4 – 1 hour hill climb (2 to 3 miles round trip)
• Day 5 - Beginner functional workout 3 (M/F)
• Day 6 - Bike ride (10 to 12 mile street ride)
• Day 7 – REST!
• Day 8 – Beginner workout 4 (M/F)
• Day 9 – Mountain bike ride (8 to 10 miles round trip)
• Day 10 – Beginner workout 5 (M/F)
• Day 11 - Pool swim & pool walk (60 minutes total)
• Day 12 – Beginner workout 6 (M/F)
• Day 13 – Interval running (8 to 10 100-yard runs, walk back)
• Day 14 – REST!

Once again, it is important to stay within your body’s capabilities. During your functional workouts, you should exercise at an intensity level that causes you to breath heavy enough that having a continuous conversation would be difficult (difficulty level 7 to 8 out of 10). On the opposite days (recreational activity), it is ok to exercise at a difficulty level where having a conversation is possible (difficulty level 5 or 6 out of 10).
